What’s with all tip here stuff?

Tipping culture has officially lost its mind.
We used to tip for service. You know—a sit-down meal, a hair trim, a valet bringing your car. Standard stuff. But now? I bought a pre-packaged bottle of water at an airport convenience store—where I scanned the item myself, bagged it myself, and paid on a touchscreen—and the screen literally had the audacity to spin around and ask me: “Add 20%, 25%, or 30% tip?”
FOR WHAT? For the screen’s mechanical effort in flipping toward me?! Who am I tipping? The software developer who coded the prompt? The iPad display?
And let’s talk about the absolute psychological warfare built into these transaction screens.
* The Public Shame Angle: The cashier stares directly into your soul while you try to calculate whether selecting “Custom Amount: $0” makes you a monster who hates hard-working humans.
* The Default Percentages: Since when did 15% become the “insulting cheapskate” default? The lowest pre-set button is now 20%, and the top tier is 30%. Thirty percent! For spinning a paper cup 180 degrees across a counter!
* The Guilt-Trip Phrasing: Some of these screens don't even say "No Tip" anymore. They say "Skip." So you have to actively press a button that says “I choose not to support this employee today.” It’s psychological hostage-taking!
Look, if I’m sitting at a restaurant for an hour and someone is refilling my glass, pacing out my meal, and clearing my table—shut up and take my 20%+ tip. Absolutely.
But if I am standing on my own two feet, ordering a bagel that was already made two hours ago, receiving it in a paper bag passed to me over a high counter, and walking out the door inside of 45 seconds… why am I subsidizing corporate payroll?
Stop using guilt to turn every single basic human interaction into a performance review. Pay your employees a living wage and stop making customers feel like villains for buying a $4 drip coffee without leaving a tax!
